Health, safety, family, wealth, and even the ability to worship are blessings many people quietly long for—yet we often pass by them without reflection. Islam teaches that recognising these favours is the beginning of shukr (gratitude). True gratitude is not only saying alḥamdulillāh with the tongue, but acknowledging in the heart that every blessing comes from Allah, and then using it in ways that please Him.
Scholars explain that gratitude is expressed through both words and actions. Imām al‑Qurṭubī (raḥimahullāh) described the essence of gratitude as recognising a blessing from its Giver and then using it in obedience to Him. In this way, worship itself becomes gratitude—ṣalāh, fasting, charity, and every good deed are forms of thanking Allah. When a believer uses their blessings in Allah’s obedience, they demonstrate the highest appreciation for those gifts.
This perspective transforms how we see our daily lives. The ability to pray, to recite the Qur’an, to experience Ramaḍān, or simply to wake up with helth and safety—none of these are ordinary occurrences. They are immense favours from Allah.
Gratitude therefore lives in three places:
on the tongue through praise,
in the heart through humility, and
through the limbs by using every blessing in obedience to Him.
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] that sprouts seven ears; in each ear is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is All‑Encompassing and Knowing.”
— Surah Al‑Baqarah 2:261
